North Atlantic carbon sink not as effective.

The Atlantic ocean is second only in size to the Pacific ocean, occupying at least 82,400,000 square kilometers without any of the adjacent seas. The North Atlantic is believed to be the largest carbon dioxide absorber on the face of the Earth. The gas dissolves on the surface and slowly sinks to the bottom, staying there for roughly 1500 years. The North Atlantic has absorbed approximately 30 percent of all man-made carbon dioxide over the last 250 years. However, recent studies have shown us that the ocean's carbon dioxide absorption levels are decreasing. Scientists set out to find out why.

Thanks to stock exchange.

Professor Helmuth Thomas wrote about this study in in Global Biogeochemical Cycles. Previous observations showed that the North Atlantic carbon uptake has decreased over 50 percent during the last 10 years. Dr. Thomas and his team proved that this phenomenon did not occur due to climate change caused by industrious activity. Instead, it is a part of a cycle, dubbed as the North Atlantic Oscillation. We should not worry, for during the next years an increase in carbon dioxide uptake might be noticed. The study brought useful results, as now scientists will be able to construct more accurate models and predict the carbon dioxide impact on our environment in the long run. But most importantly, we now know that not all climate changes are caused by man, some are parts of natural cycles, which we now know more about.

New animal species discovered.

Noblella pygmaea is the name given to a recently discovered frog, which would barely fit on your fingertip. This, averagely reaching a length of 11.4 millimeters, amphibian has until now evaded human sight. However, a german herpetologist Edgar Lehr and Swiss-Peruvian ecologist Alessandro Catenazzi managed to spot this unique frog during field work.

This picture, emphasizing the frog's size was taken by A. Catenazzi. This creature is obviously very well adapted to it's environment, as can be seen from it's size and brown camouflage. But what exactly is it's environment? That would be the the lowland rainforests of the Andes. This particular discovery was made in the Manu National park. The amphibian lives in altitudes above 3000 meters, a height where most species of animals are larger than in near sea-level areas. So this frog was quite a surprise. This discovery might encourage future explorers to delve deeper into the mysteries of rainforests.

What do birds and people have in common?

What you see above is a jackdaw, a relative of crows. Take a look at it's eyes and you'll see that, unlike other birds, it has a dark pupil surrounded by a white iris. However uncommon it is amongst birds, it is, in fact, how our eyes are made. Scientists believe that jackdaws are sensitive to human eye expressions, as they are an important means of communication between the birds themselves.

And researchers have the test results to prove it. The birds were presented with food. It took longer for the birds to get to their chow when the human was looking at it, instead of looking away. However, the birds only hesitated when the person observing them was unfamiliar, and thus a threat.

However similar they may seem, jackdaws are far from being like us. Further research proved that they do not respond to head movements and other bodily clues that we, humans, use in conversation with each other. The birds are unique, though, as even our closest relatives, chimpanzees, do not respond to eye movement as much as them.
